Two words 'author' and 'writer' are often used as synonyms of each other due a misconceived notion. The two words have quite different meanings. The word 'author' has a derivative 'authority' which points out to the fact that a person who expresses himself with an authority on the subject is an author. The writer has many connotations, even a document writer is also a writer, a person writing on other's dictation is also a writer, etc.
In essence, an original thinker when expresses him/herself is in the role of an author.

I am both an author and a writer. I started out as a poet and then branched out into article writing. I work as a web writer and a ghostwriter. I have two books of poetry. One is no longer in publication but I may one day republish it.
