wiki-hows-it-work?

could someone / anyone explain to me how wikipedia work? i just assumed it was some sort of like encyclopedia type thing and all the facts were researched and true etc but then someone told me recently that we write wikipedia? not maybe literally we as in anyone here, well maybe actually lol, but just the general public.. just submit an article? is that true? because if thats the case then i consider myself to be a downright expert in a few things and i want to wikipedia it right up lol.. no but seriously? how does it work?

WE start articles and we edit them. Anyone can. Well, that provides both advantages and disadvantages - Wikipedia can have a wide range of sources, but at the same time, you couldn't trust everyone.
If you're going to start an article, make sure that the article hasn't been published yet.

wow thats really cool, i like how people are able to using their knowledge and writing skills :) but i can see how it would be a disadvantage if people wrote things that were un-true. is there a higher power as such lol that would check everything and make sure its correct?
