I decided not to drive and take a cab from work, and the cab driver start talking to me, even i am not a talker i am good at listening to people. he told me he is a veteran of the us army, that he got shot by a gang member 5 years ago and was disabled since then.
he also explained to me that the police did catch the gang member and put him behind bars for only six month. the guy was shot twice, one on his chest the other one on his neck. police release the criminal after six months cause he gave names of the other gang member get them arrested, so he entered into a witness protection program with new identity, new job and new location
the veteran explain to me that he couldn't even take care of his injuries cause of money he was receiving 320 us dollars and 200 us dollars in food stamps, which couldn't help him pay his rent, he started to sleep on the street, he became homeless.
his fight for disability benefits did not really work, so he stay in this situation till a good person a 80 years old lady took him out of the street give him the basement to live.
even he still fighting with injuries and for his disability benefits life is better thanks to the heart of a good person, may God bless her and make her live an other 80 years.

The cab driver is too poor. How could his country do this to him! He dedicate his body to his country, but his country doesn't give him compensation,he is a victim. If the old lady didn't appear, how could the man live?

That sounds really sad. I never knew that things like like these can happen to any American soldier. I thought they are well-benefited by the government. I just can't believe that. It is good to know there are still some good hearts out there. It is too rare nowadays. Yes may God bless her and the other good people around the world.

it's happen on my country too, the veteran got kicked out by the Army from his "home office", because the new officer will assign to the house.
and I think a soldier, not enough to give herself to the country, but give "his self-regard" too. how...sad

I think most people thinks the military will take care of the Veterans. Not true.
There are thousands of homeless soldiers that come back ill or missing parts, etc, then they can go to a VA hospital because they served. VA hospitals get overrun.
I am an Army Vet but have not gone to a VA hospital. My husband served 23 1/2 years.
Now the government is trying to take away our retirement pensions.
And they are trying to lower the medical on the retired men and women.
Glad that story had a happy ending for the man so he had a place to live.
But if you get hurt after you get out of the military its not war related so thats why he did not get the help through the military.
then the state should buck up and assist someone like that because of how he was injured.
The military like many of our jobs today seems to be going by the wayside. They want to give people less and less even when they stay to retirement from the military.
