I just purchased my first bottle of coconut oil. I was told that coconut oils was good for cooking in and that olive oil cannot compare with it. I am wondering first if that is correct and second I am wondering what people have used coconut oil for and what was the result?

I use it for stir frying. It is good for people who are diabetic and those who do not to be. I have also used it when I make scrambled or eggs over easy. In fact you can use it also for deep frying and as a substitute for regular oil. The benefit is that it goes naturally hard rather then they having to process it to make it hard. That makes it quite healthy. AS for substitutes for shortening, I think it might be quite good. I do use regular olive oil when making crepes, and butter when making squares and cookies because I love the flavour. It is because it is a little expensive so for me, I limit it for regular pan frying.

You're welcome. I did read the jar and it said that it is also good for cake baking as a substitute for shortening. So that would be something to use it for. I do not do much baking, but might want to make a cake in case I have company.

And thank you for the best response. The coconut oil is expensive but worth the price.

Yes, coconut oil is good also for frying. Though, keeping a big bottle of it for a long time unused would give it a rancid taste.

Thanks for that warning... I am glad that I did not buy a big bottle of it. I was wondering if I was wise to not do so... Glad I listened to my intuition.

Well, you can also buy a big bottle, if your consumption of the coconut oil for frying is often. Consuming it in no more than a month, could it still maintain its fresh taste. And that way, you get to save some money.

Dear friend, I from South India from State named Kerala. Here people use coconut oil mostly for cooking and while having bath. Most of the dishes that needs oil is mostly coconut oil like frys of fishes and meat. It is know that is it good for stomach and skin. Moreover we use coconut milk, coconut powerder and there also varies by products of coconut. While we make Payasam (a south Indian sweet soup like taste soup) we uauslly use coconut milk. There are coconut candies. But coconut oil is cheaply availble here than any other State of India.
