Yeap, this is strange, alright!! LOL I am actually saving up to purchase a quart of vodka (which is about $30-$40) which will not only last me a whole year to drink, but i'll also be using some as a deoderiser in the bathroom (combined with lavender oil). I haven't purchased an alcoholic beverage since this past Christmas and I have been rationing it, stretching it all out slowly. I also want to make vanilla bean extract as well as cranberry extract. I thought I would be able to purchase a bottle of vodka this month but I decided to purchase some yarn to learn how to knit more complicated projects I bought $65 worth of yarn), and this month I want to purchase a few more knitting needles (including double-pointed ones for learning to make winter mittens) and I might have enough money left to purchase a big ball of orange yarn for my son, who wants hat, scarf, and mitten set, and maybe red yarn for red house slippers for him. I might have to forego the red and orange yarn balls for next month, though, since I"m on welfare. Strange, most welfare recipients would buy all the alcohol they can get their hands on :-p

Wow, the Vodka at our store is only 13$. The extracts sound like a good idea though.

I think it's great to make your own extracts. It is much cheaper than buying the ones from the store. I plan to experiment with that myself, starting with vanilla since that's what I am familiar with. I like the idea of the lavender deodorizer. I am also trying my hand at growing my own herbs. We have to do what we can to save money!

Well, the vanilla bean extract would be more expensive, however you're getting better quality. Just use 1 part vanilla (or whichever fruit you do use) and 1 part vodka, shake it up for 2-3 months at room temperature and voila :-) I strain through 3 layers of cheesecloth into a sterilised bottle. As for the deoderiser I think it's a few drops of oil 25 ml vodka. I got that idea off of How Clean Is Your House series.
