I agree with the decision and hope they will enact something similar in Slovakia (where I'm from). Vast majority of prisoners are convicted rightfully. They broke the law, hurt or robbed other people. They deserve punishment and getting a cost-free place to live, 3 free meals every day and other benefits is not punishment enough. Also, they are responsible for getting in there, they should be responsible for paying the bills too. Eliminating these costs would surely leave more money in the budget for improving services for honest taxpayers and those who found themselves in desperate need of help.

Here in Canada the prisons are like vacation spas as well. Too easy. I'd say do what they did in the old days, get'em to work hard labour. Building buildings around the communities. Getting put to work doing charity work, cleaning, maintainence, whatever the counties need to be done. But hell no, no cable tv (we ain't got cable ourselves!) no Internet, just the bare necessities. I don't mind the 3 meals a day, that's to give them energy to WORK their AZZ off! PS - Also have the prisoners do maintainence work on the prison grounds, too. No free time except for when it's time to sleep. Even this is way better than the nazi prison camps!!

i agree with this. and they should work for these "privileges". sometimes people go to jail and think that they can get away with it by leeching off the taxpayers money. This should stop most people from thinking of doing a crime. i hope this change will be adoted by other penal systems

It doesn`t look good.I think they can be asked to pay exactly how much they can earn in one day in prison not more. That means a lot of trouble for their families and probably more problems once they get out.The detention should help them to realize they did something wrong not to turn them into slaves once they get out.

I can't agree if that means that their families have to pay but I do agree with them forfeiting the profits of crime.

umm inmates dont have to pay for their meals.. they have to pay for extras.. snacks/junkfood/etc.(LUXURIES) and they SHOULD! and ive known plenty to get locked up for being idiots.. including my younger brother. and there wasnt a chance id send him a dime. not because i was worried the penal system would take it, but because he didnt deserve it. and the familes arent the ones picking up the tab.. if youd bothered to read the article.. youdve learned they were treating each prisoner accordingly, and THEY were responsible for the bill, as they SHOULD be

Have not been able to read the artical concerned but will always be of the same opinion and that should be LET THE PUNISHMENT FIT THE CRIME.

It's pretty damm obvious that 99% of criminals will be found to not be able to afford the fee. Put them to work is what I say. If the states are having budget difficulties let the prisoners work to pay their bills. I'm sure some idiots will step up and say that prisoners deserve rights and to be treated in a certain way blah, blah. Personally, I think it's wrong that they have such a cushy lifestyle.
