I notice many non native English speakers here being uneasy and humbled. They don't have to be. If they have the will to devote some time to improve, as I have done early on.
Here are some tips from a specific plan I followed to improve:
Read news magazines especially the magazine sections & supplements by well know writers keeping an eye on unfamiliar words and note down a few of them each day; try to remember the context the word is used
Spend some time looking them up in a standarad dictionary and write down a shortened version of its meaning that is easy to remember
Majority of English words have Greek or Latin roots; familiarizing the rootswill help learn a lot of new words
Get a book that is productive while being interesting; I was using Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis. You'll love it if you check that out for yourself
Here's a link to download the e-book: http://www.ziddu.com/download/5617302/WordPowerMadeEasy.zip.html
There may be some registration requirements for downloading; no big deal, considering it is a free version. Leaving this open for your thoughts with a few examples:
gno is to know or knowledge; words with gno as root are: ignorance, agnostic etc
bene is good; words: beneficial, benediction, benefactor, benevolent etc
Let me know if there can be improvements over this. Any other thoughts?

Yes-- Non-native English speakers can improve their English knowledge as you have done.
Suggestions are good. Practicing regularly will help. We must be willing to communicate in English wherever possible. After a few days we will see that our ability to communicate in english language would have improved considerably.
