I heard some people have discussed about this issue lately. They were talking about IRS had sent out many incorrect notice of those homebuyers tax credit from early 2008 - 2009, which those first time homebuyers get $5,000 credit. Those notices either telling them they owe money to the government, or they owe you money. So, what should you do under such situation? It is clearly the government clerical errors, probably due to many people apply for such tax credit in the early years. I think it should be safe if you still keep your purchase record with you, and you can make it as your proof.

Well is difficult to demostrade if it happened a lot of years ago, because commoly we wasted the bill after a time, but what I would do is go and ask to lawyer for advises about how can I prove that I already paid for that a lot of years ago.
And try to provide all the information that I have to the IRS to clarify the case.
