How would you know if she/he is your bestfriend?

During my younger years i dont have much friends, maybe becausen a loner person. I tend not to hang out with many people, maybe i am a shy type too..then i dont have a bestfriend. One day i decided to find one bestfriend.. And i find...we are always together, we hang out together, we lived in one place together.. We are always there for each other..then i declare to myself and to others that i found a bestfriend...until one day i've found out that i am not her bestfriend. To all of you guys how would you tell that he/she is your besfriend? Does it matter to have confirmation from the other part that you are both bestfriend..what is my mistake?

Best friend for me is those who are closer and always there for me..Who always care,support,and others help..
I dont know sometimes bestfriend can be a meaninful to me is like relationsip close something..

Hmm yup it is the definition somehow of having a bestfriend...but how will you know that he/she consider you also as his/her bestfriend? Do it need to have an verbal confirmation? Or only actions will speak for it self?? Great one hope you could clear it for me..thanks for the response..

It is hard for me to define best friend too- I had one before- I think we kind of declared to each other that we were best friends, we were each other's best fried and we just stuck to that. 
But we go to different school now and don't have much communication and other people kept saying that this girl or that girl which i was always with was my best friend now but I never agreed since I think she has another best friend and we don't even know each otehr that long.. maybe I will just call all the friends that are almost best- close friends.
