Here with in the next few discussions I am going to talk about the history of Jujitsu. Jujitsu is a traditional form of combat founded in Japan. The proper spelling of the word jujitsu is spell and spoken jujutsu. Although jujitsu and jiujitsu are also acceptable. Now what does the word jujitsu mean. Now despite popular belief jujitsu does not mean "The Gentle Art". In fact the techniques of jujitsu are anything but gentle. What jujitsu actually means is "The Art of Giving Way.". That is what jujitsu truly means. The history of jujitsu can be split up into eight time periods. The first time period is known as The Ancient Period. This was the period of time before 650 A.D. The second time period is known as the Nara period. This was between the years 650 A.D and 793 A.D. The third time period was known as the Heian period. This time period was between the years 794 A.D and 1191 A.D. The fourth time period was known as the Kamakura period. this time period lasted from the years 1192 A.D to 1336 A.D. The fifth time period was known as the Muromachi or Ashikaga period. This time period lasted from 1337 A.D all the way to 1563 A.D. The sixth time period was known as the Azuchi or Momoyama period. This time period lasted from 1564 A.D until 1602 A.D. The seventh time period was known as the Edo or Tokugawa period. The time period lasted from 1603A.D until 1867 A.D. The eighth and last period is known as the Modern or Meiji period. This goes from 1868 A.D up until this very day.

It will be interesting to see future discussions on this fine art. I had the opportunity to be instructed by a Japanese Karate master. It brought me to "my yellow belt" but it was not on this that I learned the most. I would like to understand more about giving way?
