Feast of the black nazarene

This is another feast that I do not get the essence of. Why would these "devout" people risk themselves and their children as a potential victim of stampede just to wipe their handkerchief in a wooden idol? Whereas the Bible clearly states that these idols cannot do anything. (Psalms 115:1-8). "They have eyes but they cannot see, they have ears but cannot hear..Those who trust in them will be like them". These idols (including the black nazarene) is not a representation of God nor Jesus because Jesus himself said that God is spirit and those worshipping him must worship Him in SPIRIT and truth, hence no need for a representation since true worshippers need to worship an unseen spirit.

I am a catholic and I don't think this tradition is questionable. Let us try to understand that this event is happening because they want to show respect to Jesus Christ. I don't think this is idolatry because it is like respecting the image or a photo of our parents, so they too respect the image of God through statue.

I would like to respectfully refute what you said about respecting Jesus by this tradition. In my observation, the main reason why these people go there in the first place is not to worship Jesus, but for selfish desires. They want to be lucky and to be healed. I have a former office mate who went there just to be lucky enough to win the lottery - definitely not to worship and respect Jesus! Other people who went there are also for selfish reasons- they want instant healing, but instead, they get more disease. Of course, this is a free country and I respect those people and their rights to practice their beliefs but to say it is a way to honor or respect Jesus, I beg to disagree.

I really agree to you my friend, 1 million Percent, you've stated all scriptures against worshiping graven Images.. Exodus 20:4-5 . Thou shalt not make unto thee any Graven Images , Thou shalt not bow down to them, nor SERVE THEM, for I'm a JEALOUS God, visiting the iniquity of the Father's to the 3rd and to the 4th Generation . :( I really can't stop my tears falling, just because believing in this tradition may save them or can heal them, they forget that GOD is a SPIRIT not a wooden IDOL, and they must worship God in spirit and In truth, and it makes my tears fall really hard when I see many people dying because of this, and they will end up dying with a FALSE BELIEF . Jesus is the one can heal, and if you wan't to be healed, PRAY to him directly, not to Graven Images

Well, each of us have our beliefs and practices. There are those that believe use these wooden to represent an image of what we believe. I personally am not against those images for I know that some people need something to look upon to when they pray. I respect them and I do not see them also as idolatry. What is important is that we have faith and we practice what is righteous and we do good to others. No matter what name we call our God, I am sure that each of our God has told us to respect each other and to love one another.

Let's just respect their beliefs my friend. I am a Catholic too, but i am not practicing those things, such as praying to a saint or an image. I know that it is a form of idolatry to do so. I am really aghast seeing on TV, the procession of the Black Nazarene being participated by fanatics, to the point of risking their lives. If only the church could dissuade those fanatics. . .sad ,but i think they cannot do that.

This is their pledge, I won't question them. But my family and I never go there too just to wipe our hanky and believes that it will give us a miracle. We can do it before or after that day. It's just the same, and we can pray for good things and better health in the comfort of our home.

You are very right! I agree with you 100%. You know, every time this feast of the black nazarene approaches, I noticed calamities are also coming into this country. Could this be God's way of showing the people that we should turn to the one and only true God? I can't help but be sad over the apparent reign of idolatry in this country. This is one reason why God's blessings are hindered. This country will remain poor and backward unless it learns to worship the true God and God alone. Sadly, a large number of its population are blind. Most of the people are worshiping idols and not the true God. The Black Nazarene is one of the many proofs of idolatry in this country which God so hates? How could these people claim they are Christians when they clearly violate God's Word? It may be quite strong but I'd say they are STUPID! They are not worshiping God but the images. God has been clear in His covenant on exclusive worship of Him alone as written in Exodus 20:3; Deuteronomy 5:7. These man-made images which they consider representations of God can't be and can never represent God because God indeed is a spirit and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth and not through this images. These images are nothing but worthless and powerless piece of graven stone or wood The devil is using them to deceive people into believing these idols have the power of God. When I see these worshipers of Black Nazarene crowding in the procession, even risking their lives just to touch the ugly dark image or even just the rope, I could picture the devil jumping with joy because this image actually represents the devil and not Christ. These people should read the Scriptures. God has indicated therein several times that only Him is worthy of worship.Idols rob God of the glory that He alone rightfully deserves and any act of idolatry God will not tolerate. As God Himself declared: "I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images." -Isaiah 42:8
