Singers from Latin America,Carribean,Europe and even some from Africa were able to Penetrate and crossover to the Amerioan charts. You may say we do have successful singers with Asian Blood who succeed in the US but those are Eurasians(Eurasian is half white,Half Asian) Trying to pass as White or blasians (half black,Half Asian) trying to pass as black. The mixed races Asian singers in the States are not billed as Asian. Singers from Asia crossing over to the west, no matter how good their music is and no matter how successful they were from their country struggle, to succeed in North America. some of them get to infiltrate the top 50 but they struggle to get a number single, No matter how good their album is, no matter how good their voice is, They cant get success that is explosive not modest.

I am just nursing a theory about this. I believe that the American industry is very competitive and they are already many American or specifically, white, singers. Watch American Idol and other reality based competitions. Every aspiring candidate wants to make it big but there are always casualties. Everybody knows that if you made it in America, you can almost make it to the world – a reason why some singers/artists/actors cannot make the cut. They are artists that are so bankable (like Madonna and other great American singers) that they don’t get out of the spotlight. It’s also hard to get notice and get attention in a fickle industry like the music industry. American critics and paparazzi can also be cruel and take some things too personal. Some cannot take the pressure well;. Remember that the artists are as also like products and record albums – they need to be marketed and even, in America,, they are bigots who cannot appreciate other culture’s talent or blame everything on race. I guess sometimes America wants only to see, hear and feel something that is familiar and they are willing to ignore the other culture of a person. As diverse as America maybe, being white (or anything relative to America) is the only ticket to fame, money and glory.

Why do you think Carribean,European,African and Latin signers manage to penetrate even if they were foreigners too? I do remember a certain point were most UK artist were unknown in the US though UK was able to penetrate the US market again, Have you noticed majority of Eurasian singers were passing as as White? By far at this moment the most successful foreign artist who were able to penetrate the US were Rihanna who is from Barbados and Adele who is from Uk.

I get your point but the examples you pointed are what I can say or categorized as relatively American. Remember that Rihanna was manged by Jay-Z and is a major influence in the US Music industry. (Lesson - get a big backer and you're into success). In terms of Brits, the English and American share a usual but similar point of view as whites. If you hear a American and a Brit sing, you almost can;t tell the difference. Some people assume by default that a white artist is always American. So if you're white, or half white, people assume that you're an American. Passing as white is a strategy to get a market. As stated before, the Us music industry is almost the world music industry. If you can get a break, you're almost at the top.

I guess the best option for foreign singers in the US is to get backers, Just like how Rihanna did, she came from a poor and small country yet she is able to penetrate the US market with an ease, For every signer US is the most important market, if you get the US, you can get the world. Adele have luck though, she is never promoted but for some unknown reason she got famous from word of mouth.
