I have recently got hooked to this hobby..I mean I have always been a collector of some sorts, starting from good for nothing flyers to stamps. I am a bit forgetful so I had this large collection of stamps stuffed into a waste postage cover which I happened to accidently destroy and was devastated because it had those East African countries stamps in it.. you know Kenya Uganda and Tanzania things which are now invaluable. So, for a while I stopped being a collector before I went to some sale and found some coins of East India Company era. Now, I really dont know whether they are genuine or not, but I bought them, and I bought a few Lincolns as well. I now collect commemoratives. Do you collect anything? Have you got some of those old coins or notes that are invaluable to you?
Do you buy any such things online? Is it advisable? Are those things genuine? Do you use online resources to confirm whether what you have is genuine or not? How do you go about it..

I too am a coin collector and I collect Indian coins only..
You'll find many coins in circulation with something unique minted on one side of theirs. I was fascinated with them and they turned me into a collector
. I have a pretty good collection by now, which includes 3 coins form the year 1888. One of it has 786 minted on its face.

1888!!! I have six coins of East India Company era..of which two I am not sure. These two are from 1839. Sach bolo sach tolo is written on them and there is LA4 or something similar to that minted on them. Kind of curious if they are indeed genuine coins or if I am duped. :)

Oops ... there's a correction .. I have two from 1818 and the one with 786 minted on it is from 1616...
I was dam lucky to get them.. Hey ! whenever you visit Haridwar, just look for those street vendors who sell coins... I found all three from the same place...

I bought some old ones which looked genuine..but not sure they are. :) How do we get to know whether they are not. The guy charged me 50 bucks. And when I asked him from where he got them he said there are plenty of them in Ganges since people threw monies to make wishes..

Morning Vandy..I am a bit of a quasi "numismatist" too...but must admit that I have been rather lapse in pursuing it lately! As a matter of fact my Paper & Coin collection has laid dormant lately....but your discussion reminded me of some of the quality items I do have!
Two of the most important items in my collection are "Shin plasterers" or a.k.a "calabashes" issued in 1870..by then known as the Dominion of Canada! They are PAPER 25 cent values. They were issued to counter the influx of American silver to Canada, and they were re-issued again in 1920-30! Mine are from the 1870 issuing! Folklore suggests they got the name "shinplasters" as the owner would lick them, plaster them to their shins, under their socks...and that way, their pockets wouldn't bulge with their riches! The U.S. also issued a similar item during revolutionary times and the soldiers kept them in their shoes!
I have TWO shinplasters (calabashes) in my collection!
I have several "V" nickels..Victory nickels issued after the first World War, and the only nickel minted in steel.
I started this hobby...seems like a kazillion years ago..NO INTERNET..and I was a religious student of "Charleton's Coin Guide"...haven't looked but it may be available on line!
99 percent of my collection is by happenstance, being in the right place at the right time...so just appraised myself of the values & grading of North American coins, and gathered in,,LOL!
I find it a very, very enjoyable hobby, vandy...and must re-visit my collection soon..and upgrade it's value. Have a great day..dearone!

Wow that is interesting information pergammano, very interesting. Hiding moneys under the socks to prevent bulge in the pockets...
Quite amusing actually..
Could you load a picture here please so that we know better what you are talking about? You too have a good time.

Hi Vandana, i ever had a collection of coins from my own country and other Asian countries as well. I still kept them in my parents' old home. I only brought along my stamps collection with me. I had been collecting stamps since from my childhood time. So far, i never bought any stamp through online yet. Because i prefer to see the stamps first before i buy them. I only bought stamps from the bookstores, where i can check the condition of those stamps before i buy them.

That is so sweet..kukueye. Good idea, recycling on things for old age homes.
I havent that old notes but then, I started my collection quite recently. And it is such a pleasure. I too suspect that what has been given to me is fake. But it would indeed be hard for people who make such fake coins to do such a perfect job. The coins look as if they've been used extensively. :)
