A big part of my terrace has cacti in pots. I´m sure that I have told you about that. I started with cacti because they don´t need much care and I could have the small cuttings (baby plants) from a friend. They have grown throughout the years and many have bloomed. I had a cactus in a container and this year I placed it in the soil. The next week, it gave me beautiful white flowers. A more generous plants is yet to be seen.

I just had to read what you posted since I wasn't aware that cacti plants produce flowers too. And from the pictures you've attached, they really are quite beautiful flowers. I would tell my mother about this. She's a bit old now and can't really do too much gardening but she really loves flowering plants. I think some cacti would really be ideal since they are really very easy to take care of.

Flower - Another flower of a succulenta
Cacti are easy to grow, don´t need much water and they give us the unexpected wonder of their flowers. They are so different from the flowers of other plants that it is awesome!!!

I bet your cactus are lovely. I love cactus but for some reason I don't do well with them. I'm not sure what I do wrong. Maybe I over water but I really didn't think I gave them that much.

Orange beauty - Lots of small flowers in this cactus that is easy to grow.
I water my cacti twice a week in Summer and at the most once a week in Winter (only if they are dry). I keep them under a roof with light in Winter. I have a terrace with polycarbonate roofing so it´s warm and light.

My place is not the best for plants of any kind. I live in a 4 plex and am on the bottom floor so I don't get a lot of sun in the winter and it sure hurts my plants.

Cacti are very hardy. If I were you, I would try. I have some of them inside the house with not much light. But I love green things everywhere.

Yes, they are so beautiful. I have had Novembercactus in a pot indoors. It has to be protected from too much light, as it is programmed to get flowers in the autumn - or maybe spring. Here is a different picture of this amazing flower: http://www.flickr.com/photos/elahe63/5198525517/lightbox/ I guess you have read "The Secret Garden" - a book I´ve read several times. It describes how little Mary and her friend became healthy by taking care of an abandoned garden. I guess you have experienced a healing process just by doing a positive thing like caring for flowers!

I have some plants of November cactus indoors too. They are lovely but I have never had them as beautiful as my mother´s. I have also read several times The secret garden and I don´t mind confessing that I still cry in some parts even if I almost know it by heart.

While I admire cacti I am much to much of a clutz to raise them, even in the garden they seem to reach out and grab me.

I know what you mean. I hired a lady to do some of the jobs at home since I got ill and she cannot even get close to my cacti. I don´t know if they actually "grab her" as you say or she has a sort of allergy. So that´s part of the jobs I haven´t left.

Why do you say "little Mary , quite contrary" ? I just understood that little mary is from the magic garden book. What is the contrary thing here though ? Isn't taking care of the garden making you feel good ? Well , your cactus and their flowers are very nice with their colours , I really liked the one with the dots (like the fast chita , we call them bardelas...I got confused and called it a tiger when commenting at your picture). I'm more interested in growing things that are eatable though. I hope I will find a good start and get a progress after I succeed with growing a some mint.

When I said say "little Mary , quite contrary", I just remembered that poem that had to do with a garden ("how does your garden grow?"). I also like to grow things that I can eat. Right now we are ending Winter here and I have lettuce, arugule, leeks and lots of chard. I also have tomato seedlings and I´m starting my bea seeds. I have enough mint to give away here. I have to throw part away to the compost bin as it grows where I don´t want to have it.

I am not receiving anymore responses to my posts at my email, so I check from timer to time here, a little at random. I have discovered that I have left unanswered some nice responses from mylotters just because they posted them after this happened. I don´t know the Pasiplora fruits, but I´d love to try them. I need some grass and flowers in my garden. I love them, but my grandchildren come and play there.

Wow , marguicha , I already forgot this discussion. How did you come back and answer 7 months later ? In my country , the summer is still hot but it also comes to it's end. It will start to be autumn and only then winter. I just went to my cousin yesterday and I ate some of the best Pasiplora fruits ever. Those were purple , juicy and sweet. WOW. Growing food in the garden is the smartest thing to do with a garden in my opinion. It is more healthy , saves money and satisfying.

woah, your garden always sounds so beautiful. thank you for the pic. when I was kid I thought cactus was only a boring plant. green, look dry, and thorny. but I was how to say it, shut-mouthed when I saw those beautiful cacti in my neighbor's pots. she placed them in her living room, if you know, the mini cacti that she had planted in beautiful pots too, and almost in every room she got except kitchen and bathroom. so when I was in her house, I didn't have any idea idea that cactus could be soo... colorful. anyway, happy to hear that you are having fun there with your plants, Ma'am. have a good day. :)

Cacti on a terrace corner. - I took this picture to show how beautiful several cacti could look if placed together.
I have cacti in my kitchen´s window sill and they look awesome. I have also given cacti to everyone I can think of as I make "babies". They have awesome flowers but they are also so different that it is beautiful to see them together.

Marguicha....it does my heart GOOD to see flowers in bloom right now...such a beauty! Gives me anticipation for the "lovelies" to come...Spring seems to be arriving early...BUT, I am still bracing myself for another blast of Old Man Winter---he usually doesn't go away this easily! What is strange tho'..is how quickly we adapt! We had those 10 days of below 0 Celcius..some -12 and intermittent snow falls! It felt cold..but NOW the days are between 7 & 9 Celcius..and yesterday I was out, doing firewood, with a sweater and down vest on..and I felt warm...almost too warm with the activity! Big Big HUGZ!

I call it the tiger flower - A picture of one of the most amazing cacti flowers. It feels and looks like velvet.
Hi friend, I have one of these in bloom right this minute. I never know when they will show their flowers although I imagine it has to be in warm wheather. For me 7 & 9 Cº is terribly cold! I used to like snow when I was a child but my old bones would feel a lot better if I had a home at the Caribbean
