The number next to your username is the user rating.It shows your level of activity in mylot(I myself discovered it as the number of discussions you have responded to leaving behind your own ones).It has no relation with the quality of your responses.While the star next to your username represents your mylot reputation.You need to have a user rating of 100 before you you get a reputation.Your mylot rating system takes into consideration a number of factors including your discussion rating system(DRS)and i based on a scale from 0 to 10 with 10 being the highest.You can mark a response as "the best" and also rate it positively and negatively using the "+" and "-" signs beside the response.This helps in a better rating...
