Gen. VK Singh is the chief of Indian Army. He has to retire on May 31, 2012 according to his birth records submitted initially --as May 31, 1950. (62 years) He tried to change the birth date as May 31, 1951 stating he will retire as per schedule already known. Supreme Court has said NO to his request. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Gen-VK-Singh-loses-battle-for-age-tries-to-save-some-honour/articleshow/11843085.cms It is a blow for a person of his stature. Why he wants to cling to power , power and power for one more year. It is true man cannot take anything with him when he dies. I do not support the stand taken by the army chief and the court has done a right thing in saying NO. If the same thing has happened in any other country, such a person would have been sent out . But Indian Government is tolerating it. Great democracy--Greatest democracy in the world. Would you like to continue working for a longer time than your eligible number of years, given an opportunity in the same post?

yes i was also watching on the news about this General VK singh. Why should they bring out this when there is only one year or he had to retire this year. What is the difference ,it is just a year some 365 days. Why should they waste our time and the courts time for this. And why should the media make it a big issue. When there are so many other important things to be solved by the Indian Government why do they want to waste the time by this issue.

umabharti: I agree with you. A person of this level filing a case against the government. Taking a lot of time of the court and people. I think he should be sent out earlier than his retirement date also.

i donot know what or who had filed up the issue, may be becox of his time to retire the office people might found the past papers of his appointment and other things so like that the issue might had rose up. As the military people could not handle the issue they put it to the court so that it can give judgement.

As far as military leadership goes, 62 seems like a young age for forced retirement, but rules are rules. I, through my own desire, retired at the young age of 55. I had worked for 35+ years and was tired of it. I know there are some people who would work until they die at their post, but I'm not one of them.

thanks for the response. Indian army people have been extremely good. In the last sixty odd years we have not seen any coup. they have helped citizens on many occasions.

Hello my friend, this is inevitable from a corrupt country. I admit my country is one of it but on my entire years of being citizen in my country I never heard any one of our former high figure government officials extended their ages just to stay longer of the position they were holding. I guess Gen. VK Singh has another hidden agenda behind his position. I just don't know.. Mobhomeir here...

the way he has filed against the government --is probably an indication that he is above board. I do not know. Still I do not like his bringing up this issue after so many years.

The right thing is not to lie about your age if you want to continue in a job. But when it comes to achieving or maintaining positions in government, many people lie. And they lie not only with their age, but also with education titles, properties, criminal records and wealth, etc. This is a matter of ethic, and the people who rules a nation must have, first of all, ethic.

Rick -- Ethics is important in all walks of life including service. If the first man in the army feels that he can get things done by moving the court after serving army for three decades --it is not fair.
