How can i stop and avoid those spams in email?

I had this email address since year 2000. I just had one email since I started using the internet. I want to change it because of the spams that I received every minute. But I don't want to change my email add coz i've been using it since from the start. I just want to avoid the spams. I hate it. and How come there are lots of spams now. I did not even subscribe for anything or any websites at all that I don't know the site. Please help. It will be glad if somebody could advice me on how to stop and avoid those spams.
