That's what we did, but only twice this winter because of the fluctuating temperatures, but last week has been fairly steady with cold weather. We didn't feel safe skating on an open lake but we did managed to find a small pond where the ice didn't take so long to completely freeze over. And what a time we had!

Wow!!!!
Like the first reply said, the scenery is totally awesome, I love it. It looks like fun, but the very few times I been ice skating, the experience was not so fun, I prefer roller skating, that way I stay vertical..
Oh, and you would not break the camera, you should have gotten the whole family in there, it would have been a great memory for all since this winter is so mild this year..

When I wear skates they bothered my ankles, they seemed to rub my ankle so much I was bleeding, so that's why I only use my winter boots when I'm on the ice. Well, not sure how a blind girl with a camera to her face would look like, LOL I just don't like relingquishing my camera to anyone, though.

I am sure you'll look fine, just have your husband or one of your children make sure your hair isn't sticking up or anything..As for having another take the picture, I understand, and if there were other people around, I can see why you wouldn't use your timer to take the picture.
As for wearing boots verses skates, I still couldn't do either. I remember one year when my 9 y/o was little, he insisted on going outside to get the mail after an ice storm. Needless to say, he didn't make it to the mailbox and if it wasn't for his brother, (who has extremely good balance, or because of his height at over 6 feet)who I watch run out, pick up his brother, and carried him back in..I don't know what I would have done if my older son wasn't here, perhaps crawled out to get him, because I couldn't stay up..
