What I mean is like saying something that might be offensive but with a smiley face at the end, does that make what was said ok?
For instance some one says "I'm so lazy" and the responce it "Yeah, that's probably why you're fat:)" or "Eh, nobody cares:)" or any kind of sarcastic or mean remark. The happy face says "I meant it to be funny." Which I'm sure many people understand. But does it cancel out what was just said?

I don't know but smiley face certainly makes the message
to be taken a lot lighter than without one where it appear
serious.

In my point of view, smileys are especially needed at most places and most instants for example when chatting, when posting comments or starting a discussion etc. It creates enthusiasm for the readers and make them feel motivated at the end of each discussion.

Not in every case. Writing is different from real-life situations, and you don't see the face and don't always know the mood of the person you are talking about. If in a bad mood, then an offensive sentence remains offensive, whether we use smileys or not. Some people don't get it that we are just being sarcastic, or they do, but it still hurts them.

Heheheh...just like Shwetat has said, it won't cancel what has been said. However, not all smileys will make a difference, though. Like those sarcastic comments. They would either make the person who reads it gets even angrier, or laughs. Of course we would hope that the person would choose the second reaction, but not many people can accept sarcasm. Lol.

Well, I always put a smiley face or emoticon after what I said. Sometimes I may make negative remarks but they are all out of a joke or friendly sarcasm and by putting emoticon I want to let the recipient knows that I don't mean it negatively. It really depends what kind of person and relationship the recipient has with the sender in order to determine if the message is going to be offensive for them. In a way, the smiley face does make things better.

i wud say yes...it does impact the readers positively. otherwise, it might sound ...or shud i say say read rude....at time not always. it does not cancel out the effect for sure howvere it adds a personal touch to the comment. sice mylotting is all abt discussions so at time different view points might sound rude...but a smiley at the nd of it says....."though i have a different view point but i am still with u,...." i wud say it is essential at times...:)
