I would suggest getting the service pack 2, not just the service pack one. I get all my updates at http://update.microsoft.com. Whenever I had to reinstall my Windows XP, I had to download the service packs. When you go to Windows Update, it will tell you if you need to install that service pack.

Firstly you will need to have a legal version to get sp1 (or even 2). If you have one you can just order one from microsoft's site and they will be happy to send it to you. You can even download it i guess from their websites after you pass the validation test. SP1 are also available with major cd issues of magazines..

Windows XP Service Packs are available from the Windows Update Site located under "Tools" in your Internet Explorer. The latest service pack is Service Pack 2 and only Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2 are supported on Windows Update Site. You require a legitimate copy (Genuine Version Validation) is required for many of the updates now to ensure that people aren't using pirated versions. When you get to the Windows Update site, choose the Express Install to install the Critical Updates. You can choose Custom to install the ones that aren't Security related as well, but those aren't mandatory. The Security Updates are the ones that are most important.
