Tirumla is one of the most holiest temples on earth for Hindus. It is very busy place with a minimum of 40,000 piligrims visiting the deity everyday.
The temple has it's own website http://www.tirumala.org
and you can use http://www.ttdsevaonline.com to book accomodation and darshan to the temple.
The temple is located on hills. To reach the temple one can take the bus, or private vehicles or, use by steps.
The ghat road length is approximately 15 km one direction and the step route is about 9 KM.
When you visit tirumala, the scenic beauty will mesmerize the visitors.
I added some of the photos which are from my recent visit to tirumala temple.

I drive down to Tirupati from Bangalore, so the drive is around 23kms on the ghat if I am not mistaken, not 15 kms as you ahve mentioned. And I have been booking my tickets after fingerprinting and also booking rooms for my famity to spend the night in Bangalore itself. maybe I'll try internet booking too. Govinda, Goveinda, Govindaaaaa! Venkata Ramana Govinda!

from wikipedia :
The town of Tirupati is one of the most
ancient and spectacular places of
pilgrimage in India. It is situated in
the Chittoor district in southern Andhra
Pradesh. The town owes its existence to
the sacred temple of Lord Sri Venkateswara
situated on the Tirumala Hill adjoining
it. With a history that dates back to
over twelve centuries, the temple is the
jewel in the crown of ancient places of
worship in southern India.
The Tirumala Hill is 3200 ft above sea
level, and is about 10.33 sq miles in
area. It comprises seven peaks, representing
the seven hoods of Adisesha, thus
earning the name, Seshachalam.
The seven peaks are called Seshadri,
Neeladri, Garudadri, Anjanadri,
Vrishabhadri, Narayanadri and Venkatadri.
