How much homework should a 9 year old have?

I'm only asking because I've had friends with kids this age whe are in school all day only to come home with 2-3 hours of homework. Personally I think that's a bit insane. Not far either. When do these kids have time to play and get some exercise? It's also a major stress on the parents, especially working parents to have to come home, make dinner, then do homework all night. Why can't they get thier work done during the day and just be kids at night?

No more than an hour tops. Elementary schools should know that these children are younger and have earlier bedtimes. Even 3 hours at the high school level is ridiculas!

I agree that kids have too much homework. In first grade my son has a few pages every night but I know that it gets worse as the kids get older. The work does seem to taper off in High School unless you are in advanced classes. I think kids should have only an hour or less per night.
