I was told that he has a federal hold pending an investigation still no charges have been filed the ATF agent says he is building a case and have not yet obtained an inditement how long can they keep him?

It really depends on what kind of charges he would be facing. Normally, you could get an attorney and seek his release. But, if he's considered a non-citizen or potential terrorist, the government can hold him indefinitely.
