Why is Trent Lott assuming the position of minority leader?

It has been just four years since Lott was ousted from his position as Senate Majority Leader after he made derogatory comments that appeared to endorse segregation and made light of policies that made discrimination legal. Does the GOP have such a short memory or they just don’t care about racial equality?
