His early Mein Kampf (1924) outlined his vision of a racially pure Reich whose master Aryan, or Germanic, race would rule inferior races, of which the Jews were the most insidious—extermination was to be the “ final solution” to the “Jewish problem.” Early victories over Poland (1939) and Western Europe (1940) were soon followed by reversals (Stalingrad, 1942; the invasions of Italy, 1943, and Normandy, 1944), but Hitler and his generals persisted.
