samurai, which literally means servant, are feodal japanese warrior, or feodal japanese soldier, u can compare them to knight at the middle ages. firstly, they are just a REAL servant, of land lord. at HEIAN period, it is beetwen 5-8 centuries, japan land was occupied by many land lord. then, they begin to attack each other. this made them to build castle and armies to protect their very land, or to conquer other land lord's lands. the armies, recruited from their own servant, which trained to use bow and riding horse. YES, at the first samurai use bow and horse as their main weapon, and sword as secondary weapon (for short range use). then, at about 11 centuries, spear became more popular, especially because they are powerful against horse, and can pierce armor. in sengoku jidai (warring countries period), 1300s until 1600s, spear and long bow are the main weapon used by samurai in wars. after 16 centuries, sword become popular, and at early 1600s, sword become the code of samurai, especially after the peace era. and at the time, there is a rule that only samurai who allowed to wear katana (sword). so many sword school build, and so many style of sword martial arts come to fore. like yagyu-ryu, shinto-ryu, ect. and at the early 1600, is the period of life of Musashi Miyamoto, the Kensai (expert japanese sword saint). the sword still used as code of bushido (spirit of samurai) until World War II, thats why, many japanese armies bring japanese sword with them at the war, to give them spirit of samurai. :) hope can help
