How do you survive long car journeys with your toddler?

Most of the time when my son was your I had a travel companion. I did have to make the drive from Iowa to New Orleans (over 18 hours) by myself round trip twice when my son was 2-3 years of age. Both times I was driving a pick up truck so he was next to me. We sang songs, I told him stories, he tries to color. I always made sure that he had toys that he could play with by himself, a blanket and his fave stuffed animal. I did stop more frequently as well. He has always traveled well.
