Can anyone suggest a way to keep my hair looking good?

I am black, and since I was thirteen, have relaxed my hair. It is very coarse and unmanaegable if I don't keep the chemicals in it. I am currently trying to go chemical-free, but I don't want to look horrible. Any suggestions on making a pressing last longer? Stopping breakage? Thanks.
