I went on a student medical mission to South Africa a few years ago. It had a profound effect on me. Not only did it open my eyes to health problems in Africa and here at home, but also to life issues and social happenings.

For one, in South Africa they seem to have a sliding scale for hospitals and insurance. I visited some state of the art hospitals that have developed new heart transplant techniques and are coming out with some of the greatest new medical technologies. These were the same hospitals that were pristene and looked like hotels inside. On the other end of the spectrum, I visited hospitals that were dumpy - dirty, no air circulation. Doctors there were even getting sick due to the poor working conditions. These were the places that those with no health insurance or those who were poor went to. It was sad. It seems as if there should be some sort of standard for healthcare facilities. Maybe it should be worldwide... what do you think?

I would be worried if something happened to me or anyone I know, you wouldn't know anything about the state of the health care facility you would be taken to. I've heard horror stories about people having to go to hospitals in other countries. Are they liable?

Furthermore, the sliding scale of health care forced me to notice the racial divide. If I remember my history correctly, the US ended segregation (or supposedly ended segregation) in the 50s. South Africa had Apartheid which ended in the 80s. To me, it seemed that although there was still tension between the races, South Africa had come so much further than we had in such a short time. Why is that? Why was it so difficult for us in the US to have equal rights? I know S. Africa still has a long way to go, bot they have also come so far compared to us. Has anyone else had the opportunity to visit and spend time in S. Africa... time to get a glimpse at everyday life? I was on a whirlwind trip, so maybe I didn't get the right perspective. It would be nice to hear what others have experienced there.

I am an ex-South African who now lives in Turkey and i would suggest you to type "crime statistics of south Africa" into a Google search and see what comes up. I can bet you after reading that your opinion about how far my country has really come will change. I don't want to say more, cause it makes me too sad.

I spent three weeks in South Africa on a field practicum for environment and development. I got to spend time in a rural creche. It gave me the impression that the economic situation was poor in the village, but progress was being made. There were few men, as they went to Joburg and other towns for work. Many of the creche kids could not afford to pay for it and they got little food besides what was fed them at the creche. There were however privileged one in the town that had modern amenities such as television and were relatively well off. What I found most amazing was the beautiful fruit and vegetable gardens that they had in their backyards. To some extent it was necessary self sustistence farming, as it was a way of not relying on outside for food.

Yes! I was also amazed by the farming. One of the clinics I volunteered at while I was there had an outreach program which went into villages and taught the residents how to farm in a way that would self-sustaining. Absolutely amazing.

Isn't it sad sometimes how people from small villages start getting television and radio... hear about "big city life" and drop everything to go there. I think dreams are wonderful, but the reality of it is that so many villagers flock to larger towns only to become homeless beggars living where ever they can find refuge. I went to a presentation once about Ghana and saw so many horriffic pictures.

Hi i'm a South African,i was born and raised here, what you have seeing is merely a drop in the bucket. The Crime rate is the highest in the world,Aparteid is not something of the past it's being turned over, racism is a daily occurance,Equal rights ask the people in the thousands of informal settlements about their equal rights. For me it's the worst i'm in the middle,i'm not rich enough to leave the country, but know i have to pay higher taxes,i have to pay more for electricity, water, and everything else so that the poor can have se same services.I's not as i can afford it,i barely makes end meet, after two jobs
