My wonderful dog is an escape artist and I wish to keep him safe and me with no fines. There is a leash law and we cannot keep him in the house since he is a large dog. We do not have the money for fencing right now.
We give him his house and water with food and toys so he is well tended!Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Please don't tell me that with this cold you keep your dog outside. That is not good.
Isn't there somewhere in the house that there is room for him. If he is like my guys, he can curl up pretty small.
Exercise him outside, take him for a good long walk twice a day, he will be fine in the house. My guys, get 2 walks a day, 1-3 miles each and take up no space in the house. They sleep. That has to be better then chained outside.

We have property and he has a really long chain and a house insulated and with straw. Someone is almost on the property at all times so they get water regularly. Feed well with the proper fats and proteins for winter weather. We augment the feed with trimmings from the house too. He has another dog an Australian Shepherd out near him for extra companionship. We have a leash law and so in lieu of fencing the total property which we will do in the future they are chained for now. We are 4 of us in a 2 bedroom trailer and no room for big doggies. We do take care of our critters and obey the law at the same time. Thanks for caring and responding!!

I have a escape artist, too. He can climb 6 foot fences. We don't leave him in the yard alone for long periods of time. Dogs are pack animals and want to be with their pack. If they get bored, they run off.
You have 2 options, if you can't do a fence
1. Always use a metal chain. Anything else, the dog can chew through. We used a HEAVY gage metal chain, as some of the "dog" chains at the store were too small and our dog broke them, we got serious chain from the hardware store. You need to hook it to something solid - like a TREE. Those metal posts you twist into the ground won't do any good for a dog the size of yours. If you can't afford a fence, can you afford one fence post, cemented into the ground? He won't be able to pull that out.
2. Before I got married, my dog climbed the fence, often was left on a chain, or I had to stay outside with him. My husband, however, is a VERY good dog trainer. He spent some time with my knuckle head, and now he doesn't jump fences AND we can walk him off leash! Some good obedience training can help keep him in your yard as well.
Our dogs always have access to our house. My dogs prefer to be inside when we are gone, and sleep on the bed all day. My husbands dogs like to be outside when the weather is nice, and we have a dog door so they can come in and out of the house. I hope some of this helps...

I do appreciate your information. My 9 year guy is wonderful. He tends to stick around on our 43 acres. He has companionship with our other dog an Australian Shepher that never gets off or breaks his chain. We did go get what I called an Elephant chain since he did break the others. Brendalee has helped us and we will be building his playpen this summer. Not some little yard but one with some room to run a bit and chase the birds that alight in his area. He is funny about those birds. We cannot have them in with the 4 of us in this 2 bedroom trailer. Thanks for sharing and responding to this discussion.

I see that you have been given a wonderful suggestion for building a fence. I would suggest this as your best solution. I do not like keeping a dog chained as I think that's cruel. Apparently your dog doesn't like it either.
Can't you keep him inside at least part of the time? You just need to work with him and teach him how to act indoors. It will require regular bathing to keep him clean but it can work. I have a 90 pound doberman that stays inside with me at night and most of the time during the daytime when I'm home. She, of course, does go outside to potty and for exercise. She's very well behaved, though, and knows to stay off of the furniture, etc. Just because a dog is big, doesn't mean it can't become a house dog.

we live in trailer since we had a housefire and eventually the property will be chained. as a rule he does stay home however if anyone came and saw him loose we could get a ticket although he is on our property. So at a down point in our life we are trying to do what is necessary so there is no additional money we have to spend on preventable things. Thanks for your thoughts. I also would not like to see a dog on a chain.

I don't have a dog, but, may I suggest a harness, instead of a leash around his neck. Then put it on a chain, rather than a rope. I cannot see him getting out of that. Good luck. Why can't he live in the house, and go out to run around and make?

We 4 live in a 2 bedroom trailer since our housefire and there is no room even for us really. We did get a harness, a nice leather one thinking it to be stronger. We had nylon ones and he chewed through so when we got the leather harness we soaked it in hot sauce. LOL the darling doggie boy chewed through and then chewed on it. He likes hot sauce..lol..Go figure. Also we have leash laws here and if he is witnessed running free and even if we are in the house for a minute we could get a ticket. No fun there. Thanks for responding!!

I don't know if you will be able to do this but this is what we did. We didn't have the money for a fence but needed an area for our dogs. I have 4, by the way. We went around to different businesses and checked the newspaper and we got lots of wood pallets. They were free. Some places just want to get rid of them. My boyfriend made a fence out of them. He ended up having to buy some chickenwire for the top because my yellow lab figured out he could climb it. You can paint the fence if you want it to look nice. I'll try to get you a picture later.

Hopefully I can explain this.lol. He dug a small trench in the ground first. I don't know if that helps. hes explaining it to me as I am trying to type.lol. He says he took some of the boards from the pallets and cut one end into a "V" shape and pounded this into the ground, then nailed it to the standing pallet. Also pallet wood can be hard so you may need to drill holes in it. I hope this helps. he says he can draw plans up for you, all he needs to know is how big of an area do you need and if it will be free standing or up against a porch or something.
