A person who wanders from place to place, has no home of any sort, is generally unkempt and might work to get what he wants, but prefers to beg for it. They often decamped in the night, hitching a ride if they could or else walking. However, where possible they would hitch a ride rather than walk. :)
Hobos were very common in the depression during the 1920's and 1930's. Some chose this way of life and it was forced on others due to their circumstances.
This image was how a hobo was generally portrayed.

Hobos come in all situations and types...some travel, some stick around a specific area....some panhandle, some dont in fact most i know myself included dont like to ask for money unless it means starving or needing something badly...some rely solely on begging sometimes out of necessity, sometimes out of preference or laziness.
Hobos wear street clothes, hobos wear designer clothes. It depends on what they have access to or on the kindness of ppl they meet.
Some sleep on the streets, some sleep in abandoned houses, some sleep in shelters and others couch surf between friends, family and acquaintances.
There are as many different types of hobos as there are stars in the sky.
We all share some things in common...we lack a home to call our own,we wander the streets out of necessity and we are all interesting people who happen to just be down on our luck or maybe have problems that cant be fixed.
Some choose street life because its all they know and society is strange to them.

Hobo is a term that refers to certain wandering persons without homes, particularly those who make a habit of hopping freight trains. They often ask for money. The iconic image of a hobo is that of a downtrodden, shabbily-dressed and perhaps drunken male, one that was solidified in American culture during the Great Depression. Hobos are often depicted carrying a bindle or a sign asking for money.
The hobo imagery has been employed by entertainers to create wildly successful characters in the past, two of them being Emmett Kelly's "Weary Willy" and Red Skelton's "Freddy the Freeloader".
Hobos, themselves, seem to differentiate themselves as travelers who are willing to do work whereas a "tramp" will travel but not work and a "bum" will do neither.
