I totally fail to understand what good it does to suspend a kid from school. It's totally just a vacation for the kid and a pain in the butt for parents. If the parents work, the kid is just probably going to sleep in and watch TV or play on the computer all day. Some parents who are home do make their kids do chores or study, but I think this is rare. At my kids' high school they have a special classroom for kids who are in punishment...rather than being suspended they are in a monitored study hall. They are not supposed to fool around there are surf Internet on the computers. They are supposed to work. I think this is a better idea than suspension, but I don't know if it is the best idea. Anyone else have suggestions on this? Not sure how we will get them to the school system. Maybe we will be lucky and some teacher will read this and run with it.

I think you are right, and the study hall is OK, but I think community service would be better. You would be helping where it is needed, and you would not be idol.

That would be a good idea. I am not sure what places would be able to handle the irregular flow of students to the "workforce", and keep them supplied with productive community service.

From what I understand, what is happening more often is an "in school" suspension. So, they sit in the office for the day or something like that. There is absolutely no point in giving kids a day off for free. Yippee for them. It is better if they make them file papers for the day, or shred paper, or work with the janitor, something, anything than sitting at home watching TV.

That's exactly what they are starting to do here. Actually the program is called PASS which stands for Positive Alternative to Student Suspension. The kids in PASS get work assigned by their teachers and work independently in PASS without the advantage of being able to discuss their work with other students. Way better than sending the kids home to watch TV all day.
