| |
| so i see a lot of discussions about anime, but where are all you MANGA lovers? :) i prefer manga to anime, but i like both. current manga i am reading: old boy (VERY good, dark) and hikaru no go (fun, waiting for something dramatic to happen very soon, i'm on volume 16!) favorite mangas include GUNNM (my all-time favorite) - first series. second, i haven't gotten into yet. sailor moon (yes it's true!), fushigi yuugi, ayashi no ceres, tomie (but angry i could never find the final volume!), uzumaki, anything by mizuno junko, kimagure orange road (okay that one is hella old haha) anyone into the same mangas, i mostly want to hear from you, but feel free to post suggestions for other mangas i may not have already read! thanks! | | | | | |

| | For some reason, I have trouble getting into manga. I have a bunch of first volumes of different series, but it's rare I buy a second volume. I have about 9 volumes of Fruits Basket, 2 of Legal Drug, 2 of Tactics, the first volume of Gravitation , the first volume of Revolutionary Girl Utena and the first volume of Fullmetal Alchemist. Out of all of those, I plan on getting further volumes of Revolutionary Girl Utena. I loved the anime, and the manga is so different! But still very, very good. I can't stand the Fullmetal Alchemist manga - I just don't like the characters or the character designs. There a few I want to get into, but it's so expensive and I hate reading it online. I'd like to get the Wolf's Rain manga, and the School Rumble manga. And I'll give the Trinity Blood manga a try. Apparently there's a Vampire Hunter D manga coming out, and I'll buy that. I love all things Vampire Hunter D - I have both movies, all the novels that have been released, the art books... And I've heard the Bleach manga is very good, but I want to watch the anime first. | | | | | | |

| | hmm, that's odd that you can't get into the manga versions...you've made me curious about how the full metal alchemist characters look in the manga version, since i've only seen the anime. i quite like them that way! i guess a lot of mangas get 'translated' well into anime format, but some like gunnm, just don't really work as a cartoon (style-wise i mean) | | | |

| | The character designs for the manga are much sharper and harsher. Roy looks Asian, actually, and Ed looks...evil, is the best way to describe it. He doesn't have the round, childlike innocence that he has in the anime. And I think that takes away from his character. It's just so much more angular and has less detail - less so than most manga I've seen. I also hate how the homunculi are portrayed in the manga. Their origin and the source of their powers is all completely different. The same with Scar. The characters just seem more flat and two dimensional to me - there's less shades of grey and more 'these are the good guys, these are the bad guys'. One of the things I always loved about FMA is how good and evil is so blurred! | | | |

| | yes i like that subtlety too about good and evil...there's some of that in hikaru no go as well...unless i'm imagining it. it just seems like there is more to the characters than the author allows us to see right away. i keep waiting to see WHO will be the bad guy coz you know, all good stories have a bad guy even if he or she is not fully 'evil' | | | |

| | I've read Fushigi yuugi, DBZ (well Ig uess every anime fan did),BTX, Ghost Fighter, HunterXHunter,Sailormoon (Ok I'm guilty I did enjoy that one too!),Magic Knight RayEarth (My favorite character would be Lucy aka Hikaru),Cheeky Angel (It's not a famous one but it's really fun!) and others I can't remember the title. Right now I'm hook on One Piece...it's really nice and funny, I love Munky D Luffy, he's one hell of a captain and the amazing power of Gomu Gomu is rocking...He's journey to be the greatest pirate of all is full of action and funny antics. Have you seen Naruto? If youhaven't you should go and see that one. It's outrageous, need some Ninja stunts? GO and check that out...Naruto probably is not the smarter ninja in the world but hell...he sure try. Currently I'm reading Death Note, It's an interesting story about a notebook which has the power to take somebody's life just by writing down their name. Well it's has some off chapters...kind of boring sometimes but the wits between Kira and L is really interesting. I'm currently on chapter 47...I bet something good will happen hopefully! | | | | | | |

| | Yes, I was about to ask the same thing. I don't know if it's a difference in subject matter, style, techniques, etc. | | | |

| | sure you two... here is the difference: 'anime' basically means 'cartoon' in japanese. generally in english anyway, we use 'cartoon' to designate stuff that we can see on a tv or movie screen. stuff that actually moves. 'comic books' might be a way we designate the written form of this. so a picture book, essentially. that is the meaning of 'manga'. so, many famous or popular mangas (drawn comic or story books) get transformed into a tv show or film series. usually, the original artist is consulted, but does not actually draw the characters for the cartoonified version of his/her books, therefore, there are often variances in the characters' appearance from the book to the screen. sailor moon for example, was drawn in the books with a somewhat sketchy style, eyes had huge amounts of eyelashes and eyebrows, but in the anime version, the style was more linear, narrowing out the eye details. more simplified. but i feel a lot of the expressions were really well duplicated in the anime version of the manga. as some people have already noted in this discussion, some stories like full metal alchemist, are much more 'cute' in the anime version, with the manga style being a bit less attractive. i hope that explains the difference between anime and manga now :) | | | |

| | gotta agree with you there...i'm also a fan of the manga. the fillers in the anime have been going on for 2+ years and because of that i kinda stopped watching it. however i'm still following the manga and it's getting really good...last chapter i read was 337 i think...where it ended with naruto and co. finally arriving to help on the mission... | | | |
