Parents(or other adults) in the Autism Spectrum...? email this discussion to a friend?

Oceyana (12)4 years ago

I'm looking for others to share their story. Do you think you may fit into the PDD or Autism Spectrum somewhere, but don't have a diagnosis?

Through a great deal of thought and discussion with my parents, I believe I fit in there somewhere. Maybe Asperger's or High-Functioning Autism. My son is HFA, and there are a lot of things that just make sense. My mom says my son reminds her so much of me as a child. I'm 28 and have learn ed that it's a little more difficult (and pointless..?) to seek a diagnosis in adulthood.

Any thoughts?

I wouldn't say a diagnosis is pointless as an adult, but that you may already have excellent coping mechanisms if you truly are autistic. However, since it obviously has not affected your life too adversely, you may benefit from learning about the variations in the disorder and how different tools can enhance your life. My youngest son is in the autistic spectrum and most of the time you wouldn't have a clue. However, when certain specificity issues occur you know without a doubt. Autism spectrum these days is about a lot more than just the kid who rocks and doesn't communicate.

Well, I wouldn't necessarily say I have excellent coping mechanisms. I agree there could be benefits from learning more about it and tools to help me along the way. My son sounds like yours. Most of the time, nobody realizes he has the challenges he does.
