For you to easily get out of the bike and easily use your foot for balancing with respect to the ground. Also to avoid accident in your organ. since downhill requires you not to sit but stand while on the track. The bike should be a full suspension. A suspension in the body and a suspension in the fork. The handle bar should aslo be a downhill type which is not the same as of the cross country bike where it uses a straight bar. For this purpose for you to stand behind the sit. NOt just stand above the sit but also behind since the bar can get you as far as from the front of the bike. Tires should aslo be a as good for downhill which is above the cross country bike tires in width. MOst downhill bikes are expensive than cross country bike this is because of the toughness of the bike. In cross country, the weight of the bike matters. The number of gears and the width of tires. Sit level should have a specific height which is a great factor. There is a way in leveling your sit for your own height. In cross country bike, there no much specification. what is important is the sit level. since this is a great factor in preserving your stamina.

Rocky mountain Slayer, Santa Cruz Blur and there are so many others. Do your research and test ride the snot out of everything that you think might be good.

Weight is not quite as important, but I always found a lighter bike is easier to throw around off jumps. Make sure that it has strong enough cranks and bars, as these are often overlooked. As far as cross country, I would say look for the features on the fork/rear shock, such as compression and/or lockout. This will help you to have a more effieceint ride. Now gearing is very important. Make sure it has just enough chainrings, without having hte extra ones you don't need. Brakes are extremely important. I recommend hydrolic for the front, and mechanical for the back, as hydrolic is easier to modulate, and the front is the brake you will be using the most. Hope this helps. Matt
