With the holidays coming up a lot of people are buying gifts & donating to charity. In high school I always looked forward to helping others out during this time. But this year things have gotten a litte stressful, and I haven't been able to take charity as far as I like.

My son is 14 months old, I have a 4 month old who is still in the NICU after having 70% of her small intestine removed & I am pregnant again & have a cyst covering about 12 my left ovary (very painful). But I am trying to get a toy drive started for the children in Medical City Dallas, in the NICU. They need rattles, teethers, books, lights & sounds mobiles, batteries for mobiles, baby swings, artifical Christmas trees w/ lights (helps them focus on far away objects), blankets, socks, and clothes for 0-6months (it gets cold up there), even plastics toy boxes. They can't have teddy bears or other stuffed animals because it can cause an infection & kill them. But some parents can't visit every day, and so some of these babies will be spending the holidays alone. :(

I just wanted to share this info. Please let me know if there is a good way to get a toy drive started & be successful. It's these babies first holiday season, and I want it to be a good one.

Sorry, it's too late for this year. I noticed this discussion didn't have any responses, so I decided to respond. I hope everything went well with your toy drive this year. Here's an idea for next year; put out a press release. send it to all your local newspapers & tv stations. also, if your local cable tv company has their own station, send it there too. Unlike an advertisement, which costs money, a press release is free. you just have to write it up as news.
hope this helps. hugs

That's a great idea! I would've never thought of it. This year my husband and I just sent flyers to his work and we were fortunate enough that all the babies were able to get something, a toy, a cushy blanket, some clothes. Next year I plan on starting the day after Thanksgiving and hopefully get more than only one gift per child.

Thank you for your response, it'll help lots with the next toy drive. :)
