years ago I started out with a web tv before getting a computer. it`s a really inexpensive way to get online. even though it does not do what a computer does. I was wondering if anyone else started on web tv?

I never had web tv. Nor do I really know what it is. Can you explain?

it is a set type box that you hook to your tv and can access the internet through. everything comes up on your tv screen. you can email, surf the web, etc. but as far as playing games or downloading, it does not do that. thanks for answering my posts.

Thanks for explaining that Sandi. So, if you don't play games, it can replace the desk top, right?

WebTV, now owned by Microsoft, was one of the first entries in the much publicized convergence of the World Wide Web with television. You buy a set-top box similar to a cable TV box, then sign up with the WebTV access service and browse Web pages using a WebTV's browser and a hand-held control. A keyboard is provided optionally. WebTV uses your television set as an output device; the signals arrive, however, through a modem and a telephone line at 33.6 Kbps (Classic model) or 56 Kbps (Plus model). i never used it coz the quality isn't very good

I didn't start on webtv but I have used it. I hate it. It is so slow. My dad has it and loves it. He likes that is works on his big tv and he hasn't ever used a computer for internet so he doesn't mind the speed. He does get annoyed at some things like some of the features on our yahoo fantasy football don't work correctly. I like to download things which you can't do with webtv and I like the speed of my cable internet and fast laptop. Webtv is right for some people but I am not one of them.

thanks for your reply. I thought it was good to start with but its nothing compared to a computer. I have high speed internet also. I was on web tv for quite awhile though before I bought a computer.

I started with webtv. Puters were way too expensive back then and it seemed like the next best choice. I really loved my webtv. I liked the community that it had. I liked being a webbie :) It was kinda slow and you couldn't download, which was a bummer, but I enjoyed it and miss it sometimes. It was simple to use and overwhelming like puters could be sometimes.

haha I remeber webtv. I had one when I was growing up. At the time I thought it was one of the neatest things ever, which really it is still a kinda cool idea. But I would have to say that I much rather prefer my compter. It has much more options. Does anyone still use webtv? Do you like it?
