Vodka.com, that is. A billionaire Russian entrepreneur behind that country's biggest vodka maker has paid $3 million to acquire the vodka.com domain, as part of its attempt to break into the U.S. market. The deal closed on Dec. 4. Wish I had known years ago how big the Internet would be; I would have signed up a whole bunch of similar domain names!

Yeah, hindsight is always better than foresight! I guess if you really thought it out you would purchase a ton of "common" goods. Many people did that when the internet first came about, often taking company names and waiting for the company to offer a bid on the domain. Some made some big bucks while others didn't get nearly what they thought.

Some people still try to do it, buying up domain names for upcoming movies. I think most movie studios just change the name slightly, like www.[moviename]-themovie.com.

Well since you mentioned it I had to check it out! I was kinda disappointed that it's Bear Stearns; I thought maybe it would be a site for grizzly bears or something... What about the connotation, though... wouldn't it give people the impression that Bear Stearns is bearish on the market?
