Does the media overhype sports and celebrities ?

Pick up the newspaper/magazines and you'll notice that while almost all areas of life and events are covered there seems to be a tendency to concentrate on celebs/sports and freak stuff rather than real news. Even really important issues are reported with a conspiracy angle or made more hyped. Real issues like poverty/corruption are reported much less and they seem to be done just for completions sake. Of course this may sound a little biased, but I just wanna start off a debate and see what everyone around the world thinks.
