Tarantulas have small brains (but large for arthropods) and may react in unexpected ways to whatever they perceive as being a threatening situation for people not highly experienced with them. Tarantulas, especially the ground-dwellers, can easily be killed by even a short fall; they can be very fragile. The arboreals are far less likely to be injured by a fall, but they tend to be very fast and can easily escape and be difficult to recapture. Furthermore, tarantulas possess venom. There is no scientific evidence that any of their venoms are lethal, but bites from some species can be painful and cause unpleasant symptoms. Some people may be harmfully allergic to certain venoms. If you are bitten and have trouble breathing, see a doctor. Most tarantulas from North, South, and Central America have urticating (itch-causing) hairs on their abdomens. They can kick these in the air or in some cases press them into an "intruder." This may cause bald spots on the abdomen, which is nothing to worry about. However, these hairs can cause rashes and occasionally bad eye inflammations in humans. Keep your face away from your spiders and wash your hands after any contact with their bodies or cage bedding. Benadryl may help with rashes.

I thought a bite can kill you is a myth, something that only happens in the movies?

Their bite is no more dangerous to man than the sting of a bee. The bite of some South American tarantulas may be serious. The trap-door spider, a tarantula found in the United States, grows about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) long.

According to superstition, the best cure was a lively Italian folk dance that became known as the tarantella.

The danger to the spider, there is also the possibility that the spider may bite, or flick urticating hairs. Spiders will bite, some more readily than others, and, though no-one has ever been recorded as dying from a tarantula bite, if you are bitten you should consult a doctor. Further more just because you have been bittern a couple of times and it didn't hurt at all does not mean you are safe. Biting is s twofold process, puncturing your skin with the fangs, and then injecting venom, tarantulas will bite without injecting venom, this is called a dry bite. Urticating hairs are hairs on the abdomen of some species, they are barbed and the spider can flick them of his abdomen with his legs, if they get into your eyes you will need to seek medical advice also.

Of historical interest is a piece of 14th-century folklore that arose from the Lycosa tarentula (actually a wolf spider) of southern Italy.Certain individuals who thought they had been bitten by this spider would attempt to exhaust themselves by dancing wildly. This condition came to be referred to as tarantism. It has been suggested that the arachnids responsible for these episodes were actually widow spiders of the genus Latrodectus.
Also from the Middle Ages are reports of a dancing mania known as Tanzwuth that was attributed to spider bites. So-called victims would seek out minstrels who would play instruments with shrill tones; this music caused the victims to dance until they fainted. Seizures, demonic possession, and tarantula bites all have been proposed as causes of this behavior. However, no true etiology has been identified, and dancing mania still remains a mystery.

Hope this information will help my friend^___^:

Are Tarantulas dangerous?
Not really - they just look rather formidable, especially when rearing up in the classic "threat posture" . Of course, they're venomous (not poisonous - the two words mean different things - see below). In fact, all spiders are venomous (except for two species, to be accurate), including, therefore, the ones that turn up in your bath from time to time, but only a very few types of spider pose a danger to humans (such as the famed" funnel-web" and "black widow" - neither of which are usually kept as pets!).

Some Tarantulas are more dangerous than others. "New World" species (i.e., those from the Americas) tend to rely more on urticating hairs (hairs that cause irritation) than biting as a method of defence and even if they do bite, their venom isn't particularly strong. However, the venom of some "Old World" species (e.g. Indian and Sri Lankan spiders of the genus Poeciltoheria and some species from Africa) is thought to be much more toxic -

Reassuringly, there are no reliable reports of any death resulting from someone being bitten by a pet tarantula. That being said, a large tarantula (e.g., one with a 6" leg span) could give you a very painful wound, similar to a bee or wasp sting, but they don't generally attack unless provoked (although many tarantulas are notoriously unpredictable, so you shouldn't assume anything). In general, however, you're far more likely to be scratched by your cat or bitten by your dog, and far more people die from being bitten by snakes than spiders.

Venomous and Poisonous - the difference
Venomous - means something that can cause illness or death by injecting a toxin. The WWWebster Dictionary defines it as "having a venom-producing gland and able to inflict a poisoned wound"

Poisonous - WWWebster's defines it as "having the properties or effects of poison" and poison means "a substance that through its chemical action usually kills, injures, or impairs an organism

So Tarantulas, cobras and wasps are venomous, whilst puffer fish, amanita mushrooms and cyanide are poisonous. Of course, if you eat a venomous animal and ingest the toxin it might poison you.

In the unlikely event that you do get bitten by your tarantula, have a look at How to treat a tarantula bite - this is an American page. UK residents should dial 999 for emergency services.

Handling Tarantulas
If you are going to handle a spider you must know what you are doing - not because it's likely to be dangerous to you (although it could be), but more because you could end up accidentally killing the tarantula! For example, the spider might panic and run right off your hand and fall to the floor. If a spider falls very far it can easily rupture its delicate abdomen, which is usually a fatal injury. Even experienced arachnologists have lost spiders this way. There are some tarantulas that are generally considered to be "safe" to handle (e.g. Grammastola spatulata), whereas there are other tarantulas that you should definitely not handle, as they will either bite or hair-kick at the slightest provocation (e.g., Pterinochilus sp. "Usambara"). If you are in any doubt, please don't handle your tarantula.

Moving a Tarantula
Obviously you will need to move your tarantula from time to time - to re-house it or clean its tank. Try this simple, cheap and effective approach:

Get a plastic drinks bottle (like a 2 litre Coke bottle). Square section plastic bottles are even better, because they will go flush against the side of the tank (some mineral water bottles are square-ish).

Cut the bottom off and make sure the cut is level and smooth (with no sharp bits left from cutting it). Note: many square-section bottles have very useful "grooves" around them, which make them much easier to cut straight.

Now make a small-ish hole in the screw-cap (small-ish= smaller than the tarantula to be moved could escape out of!)

Place the cut-off bottle over the spider in its tank, making sure any escape up the outside of the bottle is prevented (bits of old cardboard come in useful here).

"Persuade" the spider up into the bottle - this is usually quite easy as most spiders run up when disturbed - even ground-dwellers (although they are often more reluctant to do so than arboreals). You can use a chopstick, or something similar, to gently "guide" the spider upwards by touching the end of its abdomen.

When the spider is safely inside the bottle, put something flat over open bottom end of bottom (the front bit of a CD case works well). The tarantula should be perfectly happy in the "bottle" while you clean its tank or finalise the set-up of a new tank.

Now put the bottle over or into the new container (or the old one if you were just cleaning it out) and remove the CD-case-front (or whatever you used to cover the opening).

Blow very gently through the hole in the screw-cap and the spider should move down into the tank. If it doesn't, don't blow any harder - instead, remove the screw-cap (making sure you keep an eye on the tarantula to check it doesn't try to get out) and use a chop-stick or similar to gently "persuade" the spider to climb down into the tank.

Job done!

This method really does work like a dream. I was told about it by a very helpful scottish person at the 1997 British Tarantula Society show and I used it to re-house 10 spiders the following week-end with no problems at all - including moving some very fast and allegedly aggressive spiders - e.g., two P.cambridgei, a Pterinochilus sp. ("Usambara") and a large P.regalis.
