For more than a century, humans have trained dogs to give their all in staged fights. Why are animal welfare advocates no closer to ending this brutal sport? "Self esteem is an important issue with this population," adds Officer Mark MacDonald, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement special investigator. "Fighting gives them the respect and power that they do not have in other areas of their lives." Some fighters liken dog fighting to boxing, with the owner as coach and the dog as prize fighter. The owner trains and conditions the dog, pushing him to his limits and thereby providing him with the tools to win, just like a coach would train a boxer.

Now that Michael Vick, has brought the horrible stuff out in the public, I'm hoping that they will use him as an example, give him the harshest punishment, and I'd like to see them make future penalties for dogfighting much harsher. It doesn't do any good to slap them on the wrist, and let them back out. They should be treated as the evil criminals that they are, and spend alot more time in jail.
