What are the reasons why women quit breastfeeding |
| |
| I teach breastfeeding classes at a hospital and I would like some input so I can put information that will really help the women in my classes. Why did you or your friends quit breastfeeding? What was your biggest problem while you were breastfeeding? | | | | | |

| | My wife experienced some health problems when our daughter was about 4 months old that required her to take a medication that couldn't be taken when she was nursing. That's why she had to quit. | | | | | | |

| | I havn't breastfed yet (will this summer!) but here are a list of the reasons why people have told me that they quit: Didn't produce enough milk Child couldn't get a good latch Too difficult/No support Nipples bled and cracked Child not gaining weight Doctor pushed formula Family pushed formula Formula "easier" than pumping when going back to work Didn't know the benefits Child bit/chewed Wanted their body back Didn't like how it felt Husband/boyfriend wanted to help feed baby Husband/boyfriend didn't like the idea Unsure if baby was getting enough to eat Kept getting thrush Tired of leaking "Health reasons" | | | | | | |

| | My biggest problem with breastfeeding was twofold. For one, I was a single mother with an infant and a two and half year old. It was nearly impossible for me to find a clean, safe, private place to nurse my baby. It was absolutely impossible for me to schedule feedings so that I was able to be at home for all of them. The second issue that I had was too much milk. My son had reflux, so he nursed every 1-2 hrs and would then vomit most of the feeding. When he was nursing, both sides would let down, I had to keep a folded bathtowel under the breast that was not in use to catch all the milk. Because of this and the frequent feedings, I wound up uncomforably engorged 24/7, unable to leave the house without 5 or 6 pads inside my bra to catch the leaks. I'm a firm believer that breastfeeding is not for everyone because of my experiences. | | | | | | |
