THE king of Jordan, one of America’s closest allies in the Middle East, postponed a White House meeting with U.S. President Bush this week, questioning the U.S. commitment to ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The snub from King Abdullah II comes amid Arab anger at Bush for endorsing an Israeli proposal to withdraw unilaterally from the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank but keep Jewish settlements on other West Bank land claimed by the Palestinians.
