Do you think Google has the right to give out our searching habits to the cop?

I don't know if you guys have heard this or not, Matthew Schuster was sentenced to 15 months in prison for hacking his ex-company (Alpha Computer Services). The evidence used against him was his google search for "make device interfere wireless network". There is no doubt that what he did is wrong, but does google has the right to just give out our info if the cops asked them to? It is our privacy. The thought of it creep me out. Google is my main search engine. But with an internet address or web cookie they could provide our search terms/queries to anyone. And how about Gmail? I don't delete all my important password type of mail. I save it for later reference, just in case I forgot. And they have access to this. I wonder if they read any of our mail. This is kind of like the government putting tabs on all our telephone conversation.

I wouldn't think so, but itf it would have somethng to do with getting peoples identities and other secure info. that could hurt lots of people, we all might be thankful. I do think the government is getting into too much of our personal business.

I think they have every right, sorry but if you are breaking the law you shouldn't be able to hide behind a computer

The police do inspect where we search on the internet. It can help them to bring a criminal to book. But, what happens in big families, where everyone is sharing one computer. Either way, I read yesterday that one of the suspects in the Ipswich serial killing was visiting undesirable web sites.

do you actually think that what you do on the internet is private? jsut don't commit a crime or become associated with criminals and you won't have them looking closely over your back, but still you are on a public domain.

I think it is an invasion of privacy. But how else can they catch the bad guys! The internet has a lot of bad users and a lot of good users. And I think if they can catch the bad ones, then more power to them.
