| | | 3. desertdarlene (5842) | 1 year ago |  I'm not sure if I really have a favorite plant. But, recently, I've really gotten into Washingtonia palms. Those are the palm trees that are native to California, Arizona, and northern Mexico. I love the desert and I found a book that talks about the history of the desert and mentions that they've found fossils of California Fan Palms as long as 7 million years ago. Back then, the mountains hadn't really formed to the west and the area was wetter and more tropical. There were thick forests of these palms there.
I once had an argument with a woman who said she was a nurserywoman at one time who said that there are no native palms in California. I just love to think how ignorant she was.
