| | You have said it right.Movie used to be an exclusive experience those days. And so was the movie making too. They don't make movies like those anymore.Movies are spewed out at break neck pace from the movie factories like the mince meat balls. The same calculated ingredients added to them at the right proportion. They have a ready made format for each genre of the movies of which we have become tired of.There are no relief from these run of the mill movies with a new dumb face in each one. | | | |

| | I would have to ask what you think makes a movie actor a "giant". Certainly the industry has changed. In the days of Brando, Heston, Douglas et al, there was a studio system. They signed contracts with studios and were required to make a certain number of films per year. The studio did all the marketing etc. Things are different now. All actors are "free agents". Someone I think is a giant now would be Robin Williams. In his career not only has he done some extraordinary comedic work but some brilliant turns in dramas as well (ie Awakenings). To call a present day actor a "giant" simply because of the longevity of their career these days is a disservice to the industry. Sure Pacino, DeNiro and certainly Hoffman rank among the top in the industry in body of work. You'd also have to add Sean Penn, Morgan Freeman, Anthony Hopkins and Alan Rickman. If you're talking strictly about box office receipts, which is what the Hollywood industry is driven by, then you have to include Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise and John Travolta. Of course, this discussion is about the men of the industry. What about the women? | | | | | | |

| | The actors who left a great impression in my mind by their spectacular acting in many great movies are giants to me regardless of on what kind of system in the studios they worked.May be they do not make any movies on values anymore and so they do not have great roles that needs great actors to impress us. Actors do include women. How can one love without the memories of Gina Lola Brigida,Sophia Loren,Liz Taylor,Ava Gardner,Audrey Hepburn,Katherine Hepburn and Julie Christie? | | | |

| | Speaking of spectacular acting....how could we have not mentioned Spencer Tracy or Jimmy Stewart?!?!? lol. There have been some mesmerizing female performances as well. Katharine Hepburn happens to be my personal favorite although I also count Joan Crawford, Bette Davis and Garbo in the top as well. There are few female actors these days who can even compare. Of course, all would say Meryl Streep and rightly so. Susan Sarandon has had some fine moments here and there as has Renee Zellweger. I think Anne Hathaway has a lot of potential and have enjoyed a number of Penelope Cruz's performances. I think you're right about them not making movies on values any more. It's all about making money. Sad. | | | |

| | The lost of ladies are great and I agree with you 100%.If Spencer Tracy and James Stewart are not the giants who else could be. And would you allow me to add these great actresses to our list of giants.Sigourney Weaver Laura Linney, Judie Dench, Helen Mirren and Jody Foster? | | | |

| | Your addition of these fine female actors is dead on. Sigourney Weaver and Laura Linney have consistently given excellent performances and don't get the credit that they deserve. Dame Dench and Helen Mirren are stellar. Did you see "The Queen"? Sometimes just a look, a sigh, something so subtle can say so much. Both these women are masters at that. Ms. Foster....it's so hard to believe that she's been in the business since the tender young age of 2! lol. Excellent selections Balasri! | | | |

| | Well, I'm ashamed to admit that I've never seen the Prime Suspect series. I know it is hugely popular for various reasons and I'm sure it has a lot to do with Helen Mirren. She's had quite a nice mix of projects since her career began more than 40 years ago. | | | |
