Promoting Published Books |
| |
| I am a newly published author. I have published with Lulu (http://www.lulu.com/heal4michael) What I like about Lulu is I keep my rights and I remain in control. I am good at the writing part. I have been told I am. My trouble is with selling and promoting. I just created a personal web site for my books (http://www.freewebs.com/heal4michael) If anyone has any tips on selling and/or promoting I would love to hear it. | | "Healing Us" | | | | |

| | It is my understanding that the best way to publish fiction is to get an agent. An agent will find the right publisher and both will do all the marketing for you. In the meantime, have you gone to your local bookstores and asked about doing book signings? You have to do a lot of legwork yourself. Go to book stores and ask them to carry your book and ask them if you could do a book signing. The book store will probably promote the book signing but you can do that as well. Putting your link at the bottom of all your emails and posts (where allowed) is good too. Advertise on other websites. | | | | | | |

| | Getting an agent isn't easy. I've seen places that say you need one and many that say you don't. Thanks for the suggestion about local bookstores. Great idea. I'm planning to get a few more books ready. Then I will do that. Thanks again. Any advice on which websites to advertise on? | | | |

| | I think going to the local book store is a grat idea. We have a author here localy that offers a signing when she releases a new book. Sadly, I have not read any of her books yet. But I do plan on it. I am just one of those people the prefer reading a book from the beginning of the series and I can not seem to find the first book of hers. | | | |

| | The best thin you can do is get an agent. Don't worry about pay him/her until you publish your book then they will percentage of the money the publisher gives you up front. You are right it is very difficult to get one but it is worth the trouble. Your publisher should setup places to do signings. But it is a very good idea to talk to your local book stores and see if they will let you do signings in their shops. | | | |

| | Hire a publicist. If you can not afford one, check with your local college in the Public Relations department and see if there are any soon to be graduates who are looking for some real world experience. They can get a portfolio of work out of your project and hopefully you can get some PR and exposure out of their efforts. Do book signings. | | | | | | |

| | Hi "heal4michael", I would suggest selling on Ebay or Amazon.com. Sell your writings in a Ebook. Also consider mail order, as 80% of people order from mail order catalogs. I wish you the best and wish you a happy and healthy 2007! | | | | | | |

| | You know, I'm not sure that eBay would be a good idea. Most of the time, I know exactly what I'm looking for, and I don't browse through auctions much. Unless a person knows about the book already, and is looking for it at a lower price, it's probably not likely that many people will stumble across it there unless it's included in an auction for a lot of books. | | | |

| | Thank you for your wonderful advice! Do you know anything about getting banner ads? | | | |

| | You know, I don't offhand. I do think I've seen some sites that have links like "Advertise Here" near their banner advertisements. Also, I just thought of this, but you could try joining FM Writers at http://www.fmwriters.com They have a section of the forums that is devoted to promoting members' books. Also, Absolute Write at http://www.absolutewrite.com may be a good place to look. You can probably get some marketing tips from the users there, too. I don't remember if I mentioned trying posting ads on Craigslist, either. You can post something that directs people to your website. I do have a suggestion about your website, too. I think you have a very nice layout, especially for the type of page that it is, but I would recommend changing the trailer that follows the mouse. It takes attention away from the text, which is the most important part of the site. I'm not sure if it was just my computer acting up, either, but my browser did crash while I was viewing it. It could be off-putting to potential readers. | | | |

| | I haven't personally used Lulu, but I have heard wonderful things about it from a number of writers who have successfully printed their books there. From what I hear, their products are very high quality and their service is fantastic. | | | |
