Scratches on records

Wat is the best way to get rid of scratches on records that can cause the song in the record to skip?

believe it or not my father uses toothpaste and Peanut Butter the scratches as still visiable however it forms a coating that it will play with out skips. Please remember to remove all the toothpaste, and Peanut Butter completely off of the object before trying to play it in the machine

take it to your local cd warehouse and they have a machine that will get rid of scratches
