Have you ever had a really bad hospital stay? What happened?

I had a nightmare time back in 2002. I was admitted to a hospital in a new area, and my husband didn't know anything about it except that it was close. I had double pneumonia. The personnel at this hospital only had 8 patients to care for. However, they forgot my breathing treatments, wouldn't come and unhook my IV so that I could shower, forgot to bring my regular meds, and refused to change my sweat-soaked sheets until my husband got a little nasty with them.
The meals were the worst. Every meal was mystery meat and steamed carrots. Just smelling it made me feel sicker. My husband, who usually eats pretty much anything, refused to touch the trays. Those nauseating trays were left in my room for hours instead of being picked up. No one ever checked on me. I could have died and no one would have known.
After I was out of the hospital we began hearing things about it. The general concensus of the locals was that they wouldn't take a dog there. I could understand why.

Fortunately, I have never had that experience. Is there some way you can report them? I always had excellent care in the US hospitals. In Nicaragua it is really bad in the hospitals, so I hope and pray that I never have to go to one.

I always had excellent care in Iowa, but when I moved to Tennessee I found out that the whole area is a dumping ground for quacks. I'm sure the doctors I dealt with were only there because they'd lost their licenses elsewhere. The locals thought that their doctors were fine, but then they'd never had anything better apparently. One of the reasons we moved back to Iowa was because of the poor health care in Tennessee. We're getting older, and good health care is becoming more and more important to us.

Isn't that something? It is just awful that whoever hired staff like that would think they would have a fine sounding institute to make people feel assured that they would be taken care of. I'm so sorry for your experience and I'm glad to see that you're still alive.......

yes i did when my dad was operated for colon cancer (resection). it was an emergency so we took him to that hospital which happens to be the nearest. the hospital facilities there were ok but the service was bad. when my dad was out of the operating room, we waited at the 'recovery area' for a lot longer than the time he was supposed to be there. i kept on asking at the nurses station who's gonna attend to him, and was just told to wait. after several ignored requests, i already got mad coz everyone just passed us by when he was supposed to be taken to his private room. that was just the beginning, the rest was as worst (i.e. changing of urine bags, monitoring of IVs, etc), it was just terrible. during our stay there, we learned from close friends and relatives how the services there really suck. after a month on colostomy, my dad went for his second operation but that time we took him to another hospital, a much better one. we never went to that first hospital again ever.

I would report them. Also if you in the hospital and not satisfied. Ask for a patient representative. You are allowed one and they will make sure you get what you need.
