Venezia, Italy--Venice the City of Canals | | I am an American, who happens to be fortunate enough to live overseas in Italy. I have always wanted to visit Venice, and now I am afforded with that opportunity as often as I want. No matter how many times I have been to Venice, I never get bored, and I guess you can say I truly have a love-affair with this nostalgic city. I never tire of strolling the canal carved walkways, and amusing myself with the architecture and culture that oozes from every nook and cranny of this city. Does anyone have a story to share about their ventures to Venice? Any stories to share about goals and hopes for one day visiting Venice, Italy? Any interesting facts you wish to share that others may not know with regards to Venice? Any specific restaurants or stores you would like to recommend visiting for those planning to go to Venice? Please share... I've also written many articles about my travels to Venice, and for those of you who have never been there, let me lure and draw you in with one of my articles:http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/21202/snapshot_of_venice.html

JC1969 (778) | 3 years ago | Thanks for sharing that. I have friends out and Cali and they've mentioned the same thing you have about Venice, California. It was meant to be a slice of mediterranean beauty on our own shores, but it was allowed to become what it has today. I guess it is good to note that Venice, California doesn't have the Italian cultural flare either--lol.

I hated the smell of the city (it was spring 1994) it was amazingly expensive and the italians were so smelly! I hated every minute of that experience. I was planning on staying longer than 2 days, but I left on the second day. I hope things are better and it doesn´t smell anymore!

JC1969 (778) | 3 years ago | I can't say that I agree with you at all on this. The only smells that permeate this city are those that escape the numerous restaurants, cafes, delis, etc. Plus it is a city that is built up around the sea, so you have to expect the scent of the sea to be rich and perfumed every now and then, especially after storms and high tides. But that is a given for any seaside town. I guess that seaside smell doesn't bother me as I'm a native to Long Island--New York, and grew up coastally.
As for the expense in Venice, it depends on where you go. You can get a hot meal for under 10 euro at numerous places, novelty items to purchase are not expenses at all and are similarly priced to most tourist attractions in the states. Shop at the open markets and you find tons of bargains. Sightseeing the beautiful museums alone are a treasured memory. My recommendation to anyone that wants to visit Venezia (Venice), Italy, is to research and put together an itinerary of what to do and see, and choose the right time of year to go.
Venice is definitely not smelly in a negative way at all, unless you walk passed the open fish market during market day.

I happened to be London on work for a few years back and from there my wife and myself were planning to visit Italy and see Venice. It was just that when we were about to make booking that my contract expires and I have to return to India.
Venice, just seen in TVs and heard about the city from my friends who have been there, and it all sound so facinating like a city that can exists only in fairy tales. Hope next time I will be able to make it there

JC1969 (778) | 3 years ago | Well, I hope you get the opportunity to visit. I have to agree with you there is something almost whimsical enveloped in Venice. It is definitely very enchanting. I love the opportunities to go and mingle with the local Italians there and absorb more of there culture. Both my husband and I come from Italian ancestry, so to see the difference between American Italians, and what you find here is fascinating.

| | | 5. Rotiro3 (23) | 3 years ago | Wow that sounds like fun can you speak Italian or can you get by with English there. I always wanted to visit Italy and Venice would have to be on the list when I do go since I am 3/4 Italian. Is it better than Rome also how is the nightlife there? I hope to go to Italy on my honeymoon someday.

JC1969 (778) | 3 years ago | Before we moved overseas I taught myself and my 3 children enough Italian to get us by. Now that we have been here for some time, you pick up even more. But, Venice is a tourist area, and they are prepared to accommodate tourists so you find many who speak a bit of English. The nightlife in Venice has a variety of things for you, you can attend an opera, the casino which has a rich history, restaurants, night clubs and more. Rome is beautiful, but I recommend you do rome with the help of a guide, because if you don't you will be lost and it is so nice to have someone there to speak to you about the history and so forth.
If you have the time make sure you go to Cinque Terre--that is a splendid and even romantic trip. The Tuscany region is my other favorite aspect of Italy.
